Where to get local ordinance text by API

Legal research platforms are built for case law and statutes; zoning data products turn rules into parcel fields. The GoCodebook API returns the ordinance text itself — verbatim, cited and linked — for software to use. Based on public information as of October 2026.

How to read this

Use them together. A legal AI product typically gets case law from CourtListener or a commercial platform, statutes from the state, and has no good source for city and county ordinances. That gap is what the GoCodebook API fills.

LexisNexis covers far more places — it carries municipal codes from every state. What it does not offer, in its public materials, is a self-serve developer API with public pricing; access runs through subscriptions and enterprise agreements.

Zoning data APIs answer a different question. They return standardized fields per parcel. GoCodebook returns the ordinance text those fields come from, across every subject a city regulates — business licenses, rentals, noise, vending — not only zoning.

Our limit: the API covers California today. Other states are next.
