GoCodebook in Claude
Connect GoCodebook and Claude can read California building codes and the local ordinances of 540 cities and counties word for word — with the citation and a link to the full section — instead of answering from memory.
Set it up in about two minutes
- 1
Open connector settings
In Claude (web or desktop), open Customize → Connectors.
- 2
Add a custom connector
Click “+ Add”, then “Add custom connector”.
- 3
Enter the server
Name it GoCodebook and paste the server URL: https://gocodebook.com/api/mcp
- 4
Keep the default sign-in settings
Leave the authentication options as they are. GoCodebook needs no sign-in to read a section; it asks you to sign in the first time you search by topic.
- 5
Save and use it in a chat
Save the connector, then turn GoCodebook on for a conversation and ask a code question.
Server URL to paste:
https://gocodebook.com/api/mcpTeam or Enterprise: an owner adds it once under Organization settings → Connectors → Add → Custom → Web; members then connect it from their own connector settings.
What it changes
- Real text, not recollection. Claude quotes the section it read, so a setback, a fee or a deadline can be checked against the law.
- The right jurisdiction. City and county codes are kept apart, and a section number is read in the code you name.
- Honest gaps. If a code or section is not held, the tool says so rather than letting Claude guess.
Try asking
- “What does Santa Monica's code require for a home-sharing permit? Quote the section.”
- “Read CRC R302.1 and tell me which walls need a fire separation.”
- “Which San Jose code sections set ADU size limits? Cite them.”
- “Does Oakland require relocation payments for an owner move-in eviction?”

Questions
Which Claude plans can add GoCodebook?
Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Free accounts can add one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise, an owner adds it under Organization settings → Connectors (Add → Custom → Web), and members then connect it.
Does it cost anything?
Reading a section by its number and listing the codes held are free and need no account. Searching by topic uses 1 credit from your GoCodebook account per search.
What does Claude see from my account?
When you sign in, you approve access to your account email so searches can be charged to your credits. The server receives only the tool call's arguments, not your conversation.
Does it work in the Claude mobile app?
Custom connectors added on the web are available in Claude's apps as well, according to Anthropic's help article.
