8-1. OVERVIEW
HUD Section 8 Renewal Policy Guidebook · 2026 edition · updated 2026-09-23 · United States
HUD is committed to preserving affordable housing and the Regional Office should make every effort to inform owners of all available options. However, if an owner has satisfied the relevant requirements and ultimately chooses to opt-out of the Section 8 contract, it may request to optout of the Section 8 program by providing the Contract Renewal Request Form, (Form HUD9624) and elect Option Six. Owners should be aware of their obligation to honor the right of tenants to remain and all notification requirements.
HUD will renew the contract up until the day the contract expires should the owner change its mind on opting out. It is important to note that HUD has no authority to enter into a new contract after the owner has opted-out of the Section 8 contract.
